Clearwater is home to one of the most spectacular and impressive
public library facilities in North America. The Main Library opened in
the spring of 2004. In addition to distinctive architecture, the library
features a café, story time room, local history center, teen room,
computer lab, meeting rooms, rooftop terrace and galleries. A dramatic
four-story grand staircase is a focal point in addition to breathtaking
views of Clearwater Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico.

- How big is the Library?
The Library is 90,000 square feet, with four floors and a rooftop terrace.
The old Main Library was 49,435 square feet.
- How was the site chosen?
Voters selected the site by referendum in July 2000, when they also authorized
the City to issue bonds for the project. The old Main Library and subsequent
additions rested on the same site overlooking Clearwater Harbor since the original
Carnegie Library was constructed in 1916.
- How much does it cost?
The total cost is $20.2 million. $15.2 million has been committed by the City
and $5 million is private funding. Most of the City's commitment consists of
Penny
for Pinellas Funds. The Clearwater
Library Foundation is conducting a capital campaign to raise the $5 million
in private funds.
- What does private funding pay for?
Private funding is being used toward construction and furnishings. As dollars
are donated, new furnishings will be purchased for additional areas of the library.

- Where is the parking for the Library?
Adjacent to the new building and Coachman Park.
- Who designed the building?
The Library is designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern, Dean of
the Yale University School of Architecture.
- How is the Library constructed?
The new facility contains approximately 750 tons of structural
steel, 4,000 cubic yards of concrete, 1,900 light fixtures and 970 pieces
of glass. The foundation pilings for the building are as deep as 72
feet and anchor the Library to the bedrock.
- How is the Library connected to the downtown redevelopment?
The new Main Library will serve as a cultural attraction and northern anchor
of the downtown, with gallery exhibits, special programs and a variety of community
activities to be enjoyed by residents and visitors.
- Who can use the Library?
Everyone in the community can visit and use the Library’s resources. The
Library also provides temporary privileges to visitors.
