Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wireless Internet Access?

It is the ability to access the Internet with a portable computing device without having to plug into a wall outlet. Thus, users are free to move about the library and work from their own computers, even in areas of the library where Internet PCs are not available.

When and where is wireless available at the Main Library?

Wireless Internet Access is available to Library users during the hours that the Library is open. They can use their wireless devices to get Internet access in most public areas of the Clearwater Public Library System Branches. The library wireless network name is ClearwaterLib. At the present time, the only time limit is that we ask you to sign off 10 minutes before closing. The Library also reserves the right to disconnect any device at any time to manage the wireless network and to provide equal opportunity for wireless access to all users.

How do I use wireless at the library?

The Clearwater Public Library System uses the WiFi standard (sometimes referred to as IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g.)  These standards provide up to 54 megabits/second connection speed.  Speed will vary by location and number of users. You will need to bring your own laptop or other wireless device into the library and it will need to have built-in WiFi or you will need to install a WiFi network card.  The Library does not provide wireless cards. Most WiFi equipment will be compatible.  However, the library can make no guarantees as to the compatibility of your equipment with the library's network.

Can I print?

Printers are not available to wireless users in the library. If you need to print, save the data to your computer and print your document from home or work, or copy it to a floppy disk , USB or other portable storage device and print it from one of our public PCs.

When I access your remote databases, will I have to provide a library card number?

No - for the purposes of accessing the databases, you will be treated as if you are on a workstation within the building, and will not have to provide a Library Card number.

Can the library help me configure my equipment?

No - everyone's computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment.   If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturers of your hardware or software.  The Library Staff cannot provide any help beyond this FAQ.

Is the information on my laptop safe while I am connected?

Utilizing virus protection, personal firewall, and other measures to protect the information on your laptop is highly recommended. The Clearwater Public Library is not responsible for any loss of information or damage to your device that might result from using the wireless network or other facilities at the Library.  Wireless users assume all risk in this regard.
