Finding Information with NEWSBANKThe Clearwater Public Library and the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative offer Newsbank to registered library patrons as a way to search for information from both local and national newspapers. Available only in the Library ACCESSING NEWSBANKSelect Newsbank from the second list of databases (the ones that can only be accessed when physically at the library). The main page of Newsbank will appear. You will see three options: searching Florida and national newspapers, or searching the archives of the St. Petersburg Times or the Tampa Tribune.
NATIONAL/FLORIDA SEARCHTo conduct a search of national and Florida newspapers, click on the Start Search button to the right of the top database. You will then be presented with a list of available newspapers; click in the box to the left of their names to select the ones you want to search. The listing is broken down into categories such as Preferred, National, and by State. You can choose to search all the newspapers within a category by clicking the checkbox to the left:
To conduct your search, simply type in the word(s) you want to search for; you can use Boolean operators such as and, not, and or in your search, and you should enclose phrases such as gun control between quotation marks.
You can search within various periods of time by making a selection from the list directly under the search button. WORKING WITH YOUR SEARCH RESULTSWhen you conduct a search and get results, you will get something that looks like this:
Simply click on the link to the article that you want to access. Once you are there, you can return to the list of results or move on to the next article by clicking on the links at the bottom right of your screen. You can also email the article.
ST. PETERSBURG TIMES SEARCHFrom the main page, the second choice allows you to search the St. Petersburg Times from 1987 to the present time.
Results are displayed exactly as they are when searching the national database, and you have the same options for emailing and viewing the articles. TAMPA TRIBUNE SEARCHThe third choice on the main page is to search the Tampa Tribune from 1991 to the present.
SEARCH TIPSBoolean Operators AND returns search results containing both words: OR is the default operator, which is the reason you will get too many results
if you type in two words you are treating as a phrase, which is why you enclose in
single quotes. NOT searches for words preceding NOT without containing the following
word. NEAR searches for terms on either side of the operator within the given number
of words, if a number is given. ADJ[x] finds documents where search terms appear within x words of each other
and in the same order. Where x is not specified, it defaults to 1. NEAR[x] finds documents where search terms appear within x words of each other,
in any order. Where x is not specified, it defaults to 1.
