RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a technology that allows websites to
share and distribute their latest content by creating lists (or feeds)
containing links to the newest information on their site. If interested,
users can subscribe to receive these feeds and read them using software
called an RSS Reader. There are many free as well as commercial readers
available on the Web. RSS
Compendium provides a list of RSS Readers for a variety of platforms.
On the Home Page: This
image
appears next
to content that is RSS enabled. If you have an RSS reader, all you
need to do is click the image. If you have a web-based reader, please
look at the example provided for Yahoo Reader in the "How do
I use RSS?" section. Our current feeds on the home page include
links to our blogs and to our events and programs.
In
the Library Catalog: An orange XML icon appears next to the items
on the dashboard of the Library Catalog whenever there is content
that is RSS enabled. The picture below shows where you can find the
icons on Clearwater
Public Library's catalog to get information and links to the latest
books, videos, and sound recordings. This information is continuously
updated, whereas the lists from the direct links next to the orange
icons are updated once a day.

If you are using a Windows-based RSS news reader (read "What
is RSS" to get further details about news readers),
you can simply drag the orange icon to the reader.
If you prefer a Web-based RSS news reader (such as My Yahoo!), click
the orange icon. A page of code will appear. With the code page displayed,
copy the URL (found in the Address bar of your browser)
and paste it into the appropriate field on the RSS set-up page for
their Web location. In My Yahoo! you can do this by following these
simple steps:
Log in to your Yahoo account. |
On the My Yahoo! main page, click the Add Content
tab. |
On the Add Content page, click the Add
RSS by URL link. |

|
On the Add RSS by URL page, paste the URL
into the URL field. |
