Q: What is a Business Tax Receipt?

A: Business Tax Receipt means the method by which the city grants the privilege of engaging in or managing any business, profession, or occupation with its jurisdiction. It shall not mean any fees or licenses paid to any board, commission, or officer for permits, registration, examination, or inspection which are hereby deemed to be regulatory and in addition to and not in lieu of any Business Tax Receipt unless otherwise provided by law.

Q: How can I apply for a Business Tax Receipt?

A: To obtain a City of Clearwater Business Tax Receipt, your business must be physically located within the city limits. An application must be made in person at our office located in the Municipal Services Building, 100 S Myrtle Ave #210. The hours are 8:00 to 4:30 Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri and 8:00 to 2:30 Wed.

Q: What is needed to apply for an Occupational License?

A: The address of the business, general description of the business, any regulatory certificate you may hold in regard to your business. If you are using a business name that does not contain your legal name (first and last name) or is not a corporation or partnership filed with the State of Florida, then a fictitious name certificate is required.

Q: How much will the Business Tax Receipt cost?

A: The fee is based on the type of business you will be starting. Please call 727-562-4567 for information regarding the Schedule of Fees, Rates and Charges.

Q: I'm opening a branch office; do I need a Business Tax Receipt for the new location?

A: Yes, if the new location is within the city limits of Clearwater.

Q: When will the Business Tax Receipt expire?

A: A Business Tax Receipt is not valid for more than 1 year and will expire on September 30 of each year.

Q: I'm going to move my business to another location in Clearwater, what should I do about my Business Tax Receipt?

A: Complete a Business Tax Receipt application for your new location, return the original license from your previous location, and pay a license transfer fee. The transfer fee is 10 percent of the annual license tax, but not less than $3.00 or more than $25.00.

Q: I'm selling my business can the Occupational License be transferred to the new owner?

A: A Business Tax Receipt may be transferred to a new owner with the completion of an application, evidence of the sale, the original license, any regulatory certificate applicable to the type of business, and a transfer fee. The transfer fee is 10 percent of the annual license tax, but not less than $3.00 or more than $25.00.

Q: Where are hot dog stands and other vendor carts permitted?

A: Vendor carts are only permitted as part of a special event. For details please contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 727-562-4804.

Q: If I don't have a business location in Clearwater, can I get a Business Tax Receipt?

A: A business that does not maintain a permanent business location or branch office within the city limits of Clearwater but desires to transact business or engage in an occupation or profession within the city shall register the license from the city or county where their business is located, provide any regulatory certificate applicable to the type of business, and pay a registration fee.
