Voters Renew Penny

Voters renewed the Penny for Pinellas on March 13, renewing the countywide one-cent sales tax for 10 years, from 2010 to 2020. Voters approved the first Penny in 1989. The approval of the Penny during the countywide election March 13 means continued funding for projects such as bridges, roads, parks, drainage and an expanded jail facility. By law, Penny for Pinellas funds are limited to capital improvement projects. For a complete look at election results throughout Pinellas County, visit the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections.

Penny Documents

Are you aware of what the Penny for Pinellas has done for our community? The one-cent sales tax funds new capital improvement projects all across the county. Since voters first approved the Penny in 1989, it has funded projects such as the Memorial Causeway Bridge and the new Main Library. Remember that this is not a new tax - it is a one-cent sales tax that has already been in place for almost 20 years and is paid by all who spend money in the County, including tourists and other visitors who contribute approximately one third of the Penny revenue. The Penny for Pinellas funds these projects without relying on higher property taxes to make Pinellas County a better place to live, work and visit. Funds are divided so that 10% goes to criminal courts and jail facilities. The remainder is shared with approximately 52% to the County and 48% to Cities.
