Clearwater Police Crossing Guard To Be Honored

(NOTE: EMBARGOED MATERIAL -- NOT FOR USE BEFORE 8:30 A.M. TUESDAY. CROSSING GUARDS DO NOT EVEN KNOW OF THE AWARD'S EXISTENCE AT THIS TIME. THIS IS FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY FOR EDITORS.)

A Clearwater Police Department crossing guard will be honored Tuesday morning as the first recipient of an award paying tribute to Doug Carey.

The Doug Carey School Crossing Guard of the Year Award for Outstanding Service will be presented to one of the city's crossing guards at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Clearwater Police Department headquarters.

Carey was a crossing guard who was killed while on duty May 20 at the intersection of Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard and Belcher Road. He was also a former Clearwater police officer.

Crossing guards are busy getting ready for the first day of school in Pinellas County on Aug. 18. Clearwater's crossing guards are participating in training exercises this week at department headquarters.

(NOTE: Carey's widow, Jean, is expected to attend the presentation. Mrs. Carey will not be taking any questions from the media, however, and we ask that you politely respect and honor her request. In addition, if you are planning to attend, please confirm with me via email. Thank you.)
