World Rescue Challenge Comes To Clearwater Waterfront

(EDITORS: Excellent visual opportunities abound with this the next four days.)

Twenty-eight teams from 20 countries will compete in the 2013 World Rescue Challenge at Coachman Park and the Harborview Center beginning Wednesday morning.

Sponsored by the North American Vehicle Rescue Association and the City of Clearwater, it's the first time the event has been held in the United States.

The two sites along the waterfront will be turned into a multi-staged mock disaster site where events such as extrication and trauma treatment will be conducted.

Competition begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday and continues daily through Saturday.

The last day of the challenge will also be a Safety Education Day with demonstrations by the U.S. Coast Guard, the Pinellas County Technical Rescue Team and Clearwater Fire & Rescue.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue is the only local team competing. Other Florida teams include Englewood and Miami-Dade.

The public is invited to attend this free event.
