Man's Body Found By Fishing Boat Off Clearwater Pass
Clearwater Police detectives are investigating the discovery of a man's body 3 miles offshore by a fishing boat early this morning. It is believed the man drowned over the weekend.
Coast Guard officials received a call from the Reel Deal fishing boat at 7:34 a.m. Representatives of the Coast Guard Station Sand Key met the boat and retrieved the body less than an hour later and brought it to shore at the station located on Gulf Boulevard.
The body is now in the possession of the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office, which will do an autopsy to confirm the cause of death and confirm the identity.
Detectives believe the body is that of a man who was last seen at 5 p.m. Sunday behind the Holiday Inn Sunspree at 521 S. Gulfview Blvd. He was there with his cousin and her family when he told her he was going to swim to nearby Shephard's Beach Resort.
The cousin went to look for him Sunday evening at 8 at Shephard's when she and her children had to leave, but she could not find him.
He was not reported missing to Clearwater Police until Monday evening.
The 40-year-old man had been drinking alcohol before he attempted to swim from one hotel to the other, the cousin told police.
The investigation continues.
