Clearwater Police Seek Public's Help In Catching Would-Be Carjacker

(Video clip attached from mall surveillance of suspect)

Clearwater Police detectives are asking the public for assistance in finding a man connected to an attempted carjacking case at Westfield Countryside Mall on Sunday.

A 24-year-old Largo woman and her two young children had just arrived at the mall shortly after 1 p.m. when the incident occurred. They were just outside of their car between J.C. Penney and Macy's when they were approached by a suspect armed with a silver or chrome handgun who demanded the vehicle. He pulled the slide back on the gun as he made his demands.

The woman pleaded with him not to take her car or hurt her as she was with her two preschool-age children. One child was in a baby stroller.

When another car pulled into a parking space nearby, the suspect was startled and ran away. He ran south toward Countryside Boulevard and then west on Countryside Boulevard.

He is described as a black male, in his middle 20s, between 5 feet 5 and 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a medium build. He was clean shaven and had short black hair. He was wearing a baggy white polo shirt with green and blue horizontal stripes and dark jeans. He also was carrying a dark shoulder bag.

Security video from the mall does not capture the incident itself, but it does capture the suspect in the mall prior to the attempted carjacking.

Anyone with information on this case should call Clearwater Police at 562-4242.
