Gas Main Break on McMullen Booth Road
Clearwater, Fla. – A gas main break has occurred in the vicinity of 3166 McMullen Booth Road in unincorporated Pinellas County. An 8-inch gas main was accidentally struck about 1 p.m. during an underground cable installation, causing the break.
Crews from Clearwater Gas System immediately responded and are on site making the needed repairs. Clearwater Gas System anticipates that work will take place through 8 p.m. (estimated) to complete the repair of the gas main. No customers lost gas service.
The area south of Briar Creek was evacuated as a precaution. The Fire Department that is on-scene is assisting those under evacuation if they need to drive to their homes.
This gas main break is affecting traffic. All northbound and southbound lanes of McMullen Booth from State Road 580 to Curlew Road are currently closed and are anticipated to remain closed until approximately 8 p.m. Southbound lanes of McMullen Booth are anticipated to remain closed through tomorrow morning. The southbound lanes of the roadway buckled as a result of the break and will need to be repaved.
Motorists should use U.S. 19, Belcher Road, or other roads that travel north and south as potential detour routes.
