Clearwater Offering Affordable Swim Lessons to Keep Children Safe Around Water This Summer

Post Date:06/06/2019 7:56 AM

CLEARWATER, FL - Even though summer has not officially began, Florida is feeling the heat. Temperatures are already hot, and the humidity is on the rise. This means people of all ages will be looking for a place to cool off like a pool, lake, river, the gulf and more.

Spending time in the water is a great way to beat the heat, but for some children, it can be deadly. Accidental drowning is the No. 1 cause of preventable deaths for children in Florida. The city of Clearwater wants to help change that by offering affordable swim lessons starting at $10.

Clearwater offers American Red Cross certified swim lessons from parent/child classes up to adult level swim lessons. Lessons are held twice a week for four weeks, and are 30 minutes in length. Swim lessons are taught in the Long Center’s heated indoor pool, or outside in the pools at Morningside Recreation Complex, Ross Norton Recreation Center and North Greenwood Recreation Center. Those taking lessons will be taught by qualified instructors with low instructor/student ratios.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Long Center Foundation, beginner group lessons including parent/child, level 1 and level 2 classes are just $10 for the eight-lesson session for all children. The goal is that no child will ever drown in Pinellas County because they couldn’t afford swim lessons.

Registration for the next session begins at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 10. Participants can register online at https://webtrac.myclearwater.com or call the recreation center of your choice for more information. For more information, visit MyClearwaterParks.com.
