Clearwater Police SWAT Team Members Help Habitat For Humanity Build Homes

Last year, Clearwater Police SWAT team members were able to train in abandoned homes set for demolition for an upcoming Habitat for Humanity project.

On Wednesday, the SWAT team will be back at the site again - this time to help Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County in the building of 12 new homes on the site just north of downtown Clearwater.

About two dozen members of the SWAT team will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., wielding hammers and other construction tools instead of their SWAT weapons. The dozen homes are in various stages of construction; the first one was dedicated Tuesday afternoon.

"Habitat for Humanity was kind enough to let our SWAT team use the structures that were going to be torn down as a training ground," said Police Chief Dan Slaughter. "It's time for us to return the favor."

"We're really excited to have those guys come out," said Jack Shanks, director of volunteer services for Habitat for Humanity. "It's going to be a great day."

The Clearwater Police Department and city of Clearwater are financial supporters each year of Habitat for Humanity.

"Habitat for Humanity and the Clearwater Police Department have a shared vision of making our community better," Chief Slaughter said. "By working together, we can create homes for families and help instill a pride in home ownership."

Any media planning to come out should contact Rob Shaw in advance to work out the logistics. The best meeting place is at 611 Spruce Ave. The best time would be in the range of 10 to 11 a.m. Media can come out at any time, but the PIO has another obligation from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
