Clearwater Police Officers, Firefighter To Be Honored Wednesday At Rotary Meeting

Three Clearwater public safety employees will be honored Wednesday at a noon luncheon of the Rotary Club of Clearwater.

A Clearwater police officer, a Clearwater burglary detective and a Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department driver-operator will be recognized at the event.

Officer Christopher Fowler will receive the 41st annual Joseph F. Cornelius Family Foundation's Outstanding Police Officer of the Year Award - the department's highest honor. Fowler is being recognized for his efforts to protect the wife and two children of an armed suicidal man last October.

Detective Jonathan Maser will receive the Rotary's 2018 Public Safety and Service Award for the police department. He is being recognized for a number of charitable acts - helping to feed the homeless and the poor, assisting widows and the elderly with home repair and maintenance and leading a group of teenagers on a mission trip to Honduras, where they conducted repairs and painted a church there.

Driver-Operator Mike Dellavolpe will receive the Rotary's 2018 Public Safety and Service Award for the fire department. In addition to being willing to conduct tours on his off days at the fire station, Dellavolpe is being recognized for what happened after he helped a 10-year-old boy get his finger unstuck from a bicycle chain and sprocket last summer. When Dellavolpe found out the boy did not have a bike of his own and was using his little sister's, the driver-operator took it upon himself to solicit donations from other firefighters to buy the boy a new bicycle and helmet.

The Rotary Public Safety and Service Awards recognize police officers and firefighters annually for their contributions to the community outside the normal scope of their jobs.

Belleair Country Club is located at 1 Country Club Lane in Belleair.

Any media planning to attend should contact Rob Shaw ahead of the event.
