The city of Clearwater Planning & Development Department has recently become aware of phishing attempts targeting customers involved in the permitting process. These fraudulent emails are designed to appear legitimate and may request payment or personal information.

Red Flags to Look For

Suspicious Email Addresses: Scammers may use professional-looking but fraudulent email domains such as @usa.com or @city-office.org. Official city of Clearwater emails will always come from an @myclearwater.com email address.

Requests for Wire Transfers or Alternative Payment Methods: The city of Clearwater will never request permit or application fees through wire transfers, Zelle, cryptocurrency, or other unofficial payment methods.

High-Pressure or Urgent Payment Demands: Be cautious of messages claiming your permit or application will be canceled, denied, or delayed unless payment is made within an unusually short timeframe, such as 24 to 48 hours.

How to Protect Yourself

Verify Before Making Any Payment: If you receive an unexpected invoice or payment request, stop and verify it first. Do not use the phone number, email address, or links provided in the suspicious message. Instead, contact the city of Clearwater directly using the official contact information below.

Inspect the Sender's Email Address: If it does not end in @myclearwater.com, do not respond or submit payment.

Use Only Official Payment Methods: Permit and application fees should only be paid through the city's official online payment system or in person at the Municipal Services Building.
