The city of Clearwater Public Utilities Department is performing utility adjustments on Drew Street in preparation for a future Florida Department of Transportation roadway project. Work began June 12 and will be done on drinking water, reclaimed water, and sanitary sewer lines. There are currently no anticipated service disruptions for utility users, and crews thank you for your patience during construction activities.

Update as of 7:02 p.m. Sept. 11

Sept. 11 at 7:02 p.m.: Repairs are now complete, and crews are backfilling the roadway. All lanes of Drew Street are reopening within the next half hour, with exception of one lane along westbound Drew Street, where construction will resume as usual.

No utility customers were affected, and a precautionary boil-water order is not necessary. Thank you for your patience during today's activities.

Update as of 4:23 p.m. Sept. 11

Crews continue making progress on repair efforts. There will be no boil-water order issued, and customers were not impacted.

Update as of 3:27 p.m. Sept. 11

These actions have been taken:

  • Public Utilities crews dispatched to the incident.
  • Clearwater Police dispatched for traffic and public safety assistance.
  • Public Works Traffic Operations requested to assist with westbound Drew Street lane closures.
  • Necessary 20-inch gate valves identified and operated to isolate the damaged section.
  • Water main successfully isolated at approximately 2:00 PM
  • Notification sent to public communication 
  • FDOT is being notified and coordinated with as necessary.
  • Contractor, engineers, and appropriate City personnel have been notified.
Update as of 2:52 p.m. Sept. 11

All travel lanes of Drew Street are closed from Highland Ave to Betty Lane. All intersections are closed, while Highland Avenue and Betty Lane remain open to facilitate detours. The water is no longer flowing, and additional information will be posted when available.

Initial Update at 1:55 p.m. Sept. 11

All lanes of Drew Street are currently closed after a 20-inch water main was struck between Orangeview Avenue to Betty Lane. City crews are on site working to shut off and isolate the break so excavation and repairs can begin. Drivers should avoid the area and use alternate routes. 

Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

Construction Update as of Aug. 25

Road_Closure_DREW_ST

Lane closures currently extend to Betty Lane and include the intersections of Orangeview Avenue and Hillcrest Drive. Betty Lane will remain open. The lane closure will shift east, beginning at Saturn Avenue. The intersections of Drew Street at Hobart and Highland avenues will reopen.

Traffic Impacts

Motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, nearby residents and businesses should expect temporary impacts in the area. Construction also may restrict short-term driveway access and may also cause temporary disruptions to solid waste and recycling collection services.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution in the work zone, follow posted detours and allow extra travel time.
