Adopt-a-Park, Street, Trail or Drain

Woodgate Park

Through the Adopt program, the city of Clearwater partners with volunteers to help keep our city parks safe, clean, and beautiful.  Any community organization, group, family, or individual that wants to make a difference in their community can participate in the Adopt-a-Park program. We welcome individuals, businesses, churches, schools, neighborhood associations, civic groups, clubs and other organizations.

Benefits of the Program

Requirements

  • Two-year adoption period
  • Two cleanups each year (most groups host quarterly or monthly clean-ups)
  • Follow all programs procedures and safety guidelines
  • Place trash bags under the Adopt sign (Trail and Street Adopt programs only)
  • Fill out the after clean-up volunteer report with number of volunteers, hours worked, bags of litter and/or recyclables collected (note: Adopt-a-Drain has unique form)

     

Park

The city of Clearwater boasts more than 50 community parks that require a tremendous amount of resources to maintain, keep clean, and consistently improve. To assist in helping to maintain the high standards our residents and visitors expect, we are inviting the community’s participation. Your Adopt partnership will help our environment, our community, and your quality of life!

Project can be anything from removing litter, debris and invasive species, planting, habitat restoration, painting, laying fresh mulch and various landscaping needs like raking or weeding. 

Step 1.Identify a Clearwater Park

Step 2.Fill out an Application

You will be asked to create an account on our volunteer portal, GivePulse, fill in your personal information, which location you would like to adopt and agree to the Adoption Agreement. After you have submitted your application, the Volunteer Specialist will follow up with you to talk about expectations, what the program entails, confirm your location and answer any questions you may have.

Step 3.Schedule your first cleanup

After you've been approved, you can schedule your first cleanup. Communicate your project date at least 30 days in advance in order to ensure there are no conflicts with other clean-up groups, supplies and to schedule trash bag pickup.

The city will provide litter pickers, trash bags, gloves and report forms. Supplies must be picked up the week before your cleanup and dropped off the following Wednesday.

After your cleanup is complete, you must sign in to GivePulse and submit a cleanup report to track your group's volunteer hours, the amount of trash removed and other accomplishments.

Street

The Adopt-A-Street Program encourages organizations to adopt an area of roadway that is about one mile in length with residential and commercial use for litter control two times per year. The Adopt-A-Street Program promotes community pride by demonstrating that the community is active and passionate in their direct contributions to a clean and safe environment.

Step 1.Identify a Street Within City Limits

Streets are first come, first serve, and must be verified as city-owned. It can be a street, parkway or right-of-way.

Trail

Adopt-a-Trail partners greatly enhance the appearance of the trail and help to reduce the debris entering our waterways, which pollutes the natural habitats of our native wildlife.

Step 1.Select a section of a Clearwater trail to adopt

Select a section of Ream Wilson Trail, Bayshore Trail, Druid Road Trail, East Avenue Trail, or the Memorial Causeway that your group would like to adopt. Larger groups may be able to adopt more than one section. Trail sections may be adopted out twice. This will allow for trash and debris to be removed more often.

Drain

The city of Clearwater is launching the Adopt-a-Drain Program, which gives residents, neighborhoods and community groups a simple way to help protect our environment and reduce flooding. When you adopt a storm drain, you keep leaves, trash and other debris off the grate. Doing this before storms is especially important. 

Most storm drains flow directly into lakes, creeks and waterways without any filtration. Anything that enters a drain goes straight into the Tampa Bay Watershed or the gulf and nearby waterways. By keeping drains clear, you help prevent pollution, protect wildlife and support the long-term resilience of Clearwater’s waterways. 

The program is supported by grants from the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council and the Tampa Bay Estuary Program.

Step 2.Keep Your Drain Clear 

Sweep leaves, trash and other debris off the drain surface year round. 

Step 3.Track Your Impact 

Keep an estimated total of the debris you collect and enter it into your online account so we can gauge the cumulative results of our work. 

Step 4.Lead by Example

Let friends and neighbors know about your commitment and, if they ask, tell them about small things they can do at home to prevent water pollution.
