Cleveland
Street District
Grand Opening
The Cleveland Street District officially opened with events on
Dec. 14 and 15. Crowds enjoyed live entertainment as officials
unwrapped the city's holiday gift on Friday evening with the unveiling
of the district’s new logo. Saturday's daytime Holiday Parade
was a fitting kickoff to festivities along Cleveland Street that
lasted well into the afternoon. Crowds packed the street for entertainment,
games, crafts, a petting zoo, and rides in haywagons, on ponies
and in a rocket car.

Downtown Public Investment
With work on the Cleveland Street Streetscape complete, city officials
have begun focusing on marketing the new downtown (see market study).
A Retail Request for Proposals to attract businesses along the
newly-completed thoroughfare was released Jan. 13, and a fresh,
new logo that will be placed on street banners and other collateral
materials has been adopted. Dubbed "The Cleveland Street District," regular
street festivals and events are expected to draw patrons to the
area. A designer/builder for the Downtown
Boat Slips will be chosen
in the first part of 2008, with construction of the 120 to 149
public boat slips at the foot of the Memorial Causeway Bridge slated
to begin the following fall. The project should take around a year
to complete and cost about $11-million.
Downtown Private Investment
Sparked by the resurgence of residential construction, Jamba
Juice has recently joined Starbuck’s Coffee as
national chain franchises that now do business downtown.
Additionally, new downtown housing has already begun to kick-start
commerce in the Cleveland Street District. New high-rise condominium/mixed-use
projects in the downtown core are currently under construction,
including:

Station Square - Adding
to the excitement of a new Cleveland Street streetscape are
the city's first housing units in the downtown core in decades.
In the heart of downtown is the Station
Square Condominium project, located between the historic
U.S. Post Office and Station Square Park. This project is
being built on the existing parking adjacent to Station Square
Park which is owned by the city's Community Redevelopment
Agency (CRA). Amon Investments, Inc. broke ground on the
$70 million project in May 2006. The project is a 15-story
building with 126 residential condominium units, and 10,000
square feet of ground floor retail including a major restaurant
space. In addition, the project will provide more than 100
public parking spaces within a structured garage. Interested
parties should contact the Station Square Sales Office at
(727) 447-0700 for more information. During the anticipated
18-month construction period, Station Square Park will be
closed and used as a construction staging area for the project.Next
door, the renovation of Station Square Park will be launched
early next summer as the Station Square project nears completion.
